Application Process

Huaka‘i Hawai‘i Facilitator Criteria
 

Our facilitators must be:

  • At least 21 years of age by July 18, 2026

  • Able to communicate in a conversational level of English 

  • Physically able to participate in all Huaka`i Hawai`i program activities.

  • Able to hike as much as 6 miles (primarily on flat ground but with periodic uphill)

  • Comfortable getting dirty and muddy in the outdoors

  • Hold a valid driver’s license.

  • Lifeguard certified by July 10, 2026 (unless an exception is made)

  • Available for course planning and curriculum refinement online meetings between May 1st – July 9, 2026

  • Able to attend in-person staff training and course prep on Oahu, July 10- 17, 2026

  •  Able to participate in-person for the entire Huaka`i Hawai`i program July 18-August 1, 2026 (exceptions may be made for highly qualified individuals)

  • Participate  in-person in post-Huaka`i Hawai`i debrief session August 2, 2026

  • Participate in online debriefs, documentation, and communication as needed: August  4 -14, 2026

 

Ideal facilitators have a warm and friendly disposition and enjoy creating an atmosphere where participants feel welcomed. They put participants before themselves and work for the success of the program. They are collaborators & excellent communicators with strong interpersonal skills who love working with others, and believe that ultimately the best results come from shared investment and buy-in across all levels of the team.

 

We expect our Facilitators to:

  • Embrace the SOL Center-UWC course values.

  • Be excited about wanting to be a positive and memorable part of the participants' experience.

  • Enjoy coaching and motivating young people.

  • Be available to participants at all times, conscious of group members’ individual needs while keeping the needs of the group as primary focus.

  • Have some experience with planning and developing activities for youth.

  • Have some experience in risk management and experiential education.

  • Be passionate about climate justice, sustainability, and peace and helping others develop their knowledge and leadership skills.

  • Be open to constructive feedback

  • Demonstrate reliability including completing tasks on time, strictly adhering to deadlines and following up in a timely manner.

  • Be flexible, adaptable, and dependable

  • Stay calm under high stress pressure situations


Facilitator Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the directors and instructors  

  • Participating in all activities (unless an exception is made)

  • Assisting with all logistical tasks. This includes re-confirming details, keeping track of participants, exercising good time management, and making sure that the program is being delivered at a high level of quality.

  • Supporting participants’ social and health well-being via integrating oneself in the residential life, educational experiences, all meals and sleeping in the cabins with the participants.

  • Providing a positive learning environment and maintaining professional boundaries

  • Facilitating and modeling positive, non-violent communication skills

  • Facilitating meaningful discussions and debriefs

  • Helping to effectively present information and responding to questions from participants

  • Leading and inspiring participants to achieve their goals


Program Details

Contract Length:

  • Online Planning (Part Time): May 1 – July 9, 2026

  • On-Site (Full time): July 10 – August 2, 2026

  • Online Follow-up (Part Time): August  4 - 14, 2026

Compensation / Covered Expenses:

  • $1,500 (dependent upon fundraising success)

  • Room and board
